This week is when we voters for the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Awards need to narrow down our choices and make our selections. It’s wonderful to be able to honor the best in Broadway and Off-Broadway theater.

The Drama Desk Awards are May 23 and the Outer Critics are May 27. For a list of the nominees and for the winners, when they are announced, visit http://reflectionsinthelight.blogspot.com.

The American Theater Critics Association, which votes to recommend the Tony Award for Regional Theater, already have voted and the winner is The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center right here in Waterford, CT. The O’Neill is a marvelous hub of theater creativity and has been the catalyst for a number of shows that have gone on to success on the Great White Way. I enjoyed two of the most rewarding weeks of my professional career when I was a Fellow there in 2008 for the National Critics Institute.

The awards season will come to a close with the Tonys on Sunday, June 13 from Radio City Music Hall. I won’t be attending this year, but I will be watching on TV. Then all of us reviewers will be able to enjoy a little vacation until the start of the 2010-2011 season!

Here is the listing of winners of the 2009 Sigma Delta Chi Awards for Excellence in Journalism. I was honored to be a judge this year. Two excellent journalists and old friends, Sheila Cawvey Boggess and Carol Shell Harris, were on my team.

It was difficult. Lots of great writing to read through. Given the state of so much poor journalism out there, it was encouraging to see that there still are many great writers reporting on important issues all over the Unted States. This is what a free press should look like!
